uMgungundlovu District, KwaZulu-Natal
uMgungundlovu district municipality is home to Pietermaritzburg, the capital city of KwaZulu-Natal. Pietermaritzburg is the second largest city in the province after eThekwini. Other towns in the district include Mooi River, Howick, Richmond and Camperdown. The district has well-established infrastructure and includes some traditional authority areas. While a range of services are available in the cities and larger towns, access is more limited in the smaller towns and rural areas.
Children make up 40% of the district population.1 Some 93% of school-aged children (7 – 17 years) are reported to be attending school.2 Almost half (47%) of the children in this district live in rural areas.3 The map below shows where the children live (by ward, with darker areas indicating more children) and where selected services are located. Click on the purple legend in the bottom right-hand corner to select services. To view details, click within the ward or on the coloured dots.
